Hazard identification numbers

Hazard identification numbers sit on the top half of the orange plate. It tells an emergency service what they are dealing with before anyone opens a document. This page lists all seventy four we hold, with the official Dutch wording beside the English.

How to read the number

The first digit is the primary hazard and matches the class: 2 is a gas, 3 a flammable liquid, 4 a flammable solid, 5 an oxidising substance, 6 toxic, 7 radioactive, 8 corrosive and 9 miscellaneous. The digits after it are subsidiary hazards using the same key, and a repeated digit intensifies the first, which is why 88 is a highly corrosive substance and 80 is merely a corrosive one.

A zero means there is nothing further to add. An X in front is the one that changes what a fire crew may do: it means the substance reacts dangerously with water, so water may only be used with expert approval. That rule is stated in the ADR text itself, which is where we take it from rather than paraphrasing it.

Why the number and the UN number are not the same thing

The orange plate carries two numbers and they answer different questions. The lower one is the UN number and identifies the substance. The upper one is this number and identifies the behaviour. Two different substances can share a hazard identification number, and one substance keeps its UN number whatever else is on the vehicle.

When we quote an ADR load we return both, along with the class, the packing group and the tunnel restriction code, before we ask for anything. A dispatcher who has those five things can check a route without opening the regulation.

Frequently asked

What does the X in front of a hazard number mean?

That the substance reacts dangerously with water. Water may only be used to fight the fire with the approval of experts. The rule is set out in ADR 5.3.2.3.2.

Why is 88 different from 80?

A repeated digit intensifies the first one. 80 is a corrosive substance, 88 is a highly corrosive substance.

Is this the same as the UN number?

No. The hazard identification number sits on the top half of the orange plate and describes the behaviour. The UN number sits on the bottom half and identifies the substance.

The Dutch wording is transcribed from section 5.3.2.3.2 of the official Dutch text of ADR 2025 published by the Rijksoverheid, which we hold as a source document. Seventy one of the seventy four resolved against it; the three that did not are marked in the dataset rather than filled in. The English wording is our translation of the official German wording, checked against the Dutch where both are present. It is a translation and is marked as one, not presented as an official ADR column.

Moving a load with one of these numbers?

Send the UN number and the route. We return the class, the packing group, the hazard identification number and the tunnel code before we talk about price.
