Bulk Powder Transport
Bulk powder transport across Europe in pneumatic powder tankers and silo vehicles. Cement, lime, fly ash, polymer granulate, soda and food grade powders, blown into your silo by the vehicle's own compressor.
Bulk powder transport in pneumatic tankers and silo vehicles across Europe. Payload is set by bulk density rather than volume, discharge runs through the on-board compressor into your silo, and food grade movements run on dedicated vehicles with a cleaning certificate.
Bulk density decides the load, not volume
The most common mistake on a powder tanker booking is specifying by cubic metres. A 60 cubic metre vehicle is full and still light on polymer granulate, while cement reaches the weight limit long before the vehicle is full. Ask for volume and you get a vehicle that either runs half empty or cannot legally load.
We ask for the product, its bulk density and particle size first, and quantity second. Only then is it clear how many compartments are needed and what payload is realistic, which for most industrial powders lands between 25 and 27 tonnes.
| Product group | Examples | Bulk density | Constraint |
|---|---|---|---|
| Polymers | PE, PP, PVC, PET granulate | 0.3 to 0.6 t/m³ | Volume limited, large silo needed |
| Mineral | Cement, lime, fly ash, quartz | 0.9 to 1.4 t/m³ | Weight limited, full discharge matters |
| Chemical | Soda ash, salts, sulphates | 0.8 to 1.3 t/m³ | Keep dry, check filters |
| Food grade | Flour, sugar, starch, feed | 0.5 to 0.8 t/m³ | Dedicated vehicle and cleaning certificate |
Pneumatic discharge and blowing time
A pneumatic tanker discharges through its own compressor, pressurising the compartments and blowing the product through a line into the receiving silo, usually via a four inch or DN100 connection. Expect 45 to 90 minutes depending on product, line length and lift height.
Long lines and tall silos extend that considerably, and with delicate granulate the pressure is deliberately limited to avoid attrition and angel hair. We confirm the connection type, line length and whether a weighbridge is available before the vehicle is dispatched, because those three questions cause most of the waiting time on site.
Food grade and dedicated vehicles
For flour, sugar, starch and feed a clean vehicle is not sufficient. The previous loads have to be acceptable, the cleaning has to be documented, and the certificate has to travel with the load. We work with stations issuing a European cleaning document and attach it to the job file.
Where a product may not touch certain prior loads at all, we use dedicated vehicles that only run in that segment. See also Silotransport for the German market.
Frequently asked questions
What is bulk powder transport?
Bulk powder transport moves dry bulk products such as cement, lime, polymer granulate, soda ash and food powders in pneumatic tankers or silo vehicles, discharged by the vehicle's own compressor into a receiving silo rather than handled in bags or pallets.
How much can a powder tanker carry?
Typically 25 to 27 tonnes for industrial powders. The limit depends on bulk density: polymer granulate is volume limited and often will not reach full payload, while cement and lime hit the weight limit before the vehicle is full.
How long does pneumatic discharge take?
Usually 45 to 90 minutes depending on product, line length and lift height. Long lines and tall silos extend it, and delicate granulate is blown at reduced pressure to avoid attrition.
Do you carry food grade powders?
Yes, on dedicated vehicles with documented cleaning. The cleaning certificate listing previous loads travels with the transport order.
Silo intake windows are the real constraint, not the road
Powder work is planned around the receiving silo rather than the journey. A pneumatic discharge occupies the intake point for up to an hour and a half, and most plants run a booking system for that slot. Missing it usually costs more than the transport leg, because the vehicle then waits or returns.
- Confirm the intake booking before the vehicle is dispatched, not while it is en route
- Check the coupling type and line length, four inch and DN100 are common but not universal
- Tall silos and long lines extend blowing time considerably and reduce achievable loads per day
- Weekend and night intake is often unstaffed even where the road is legally open
- In Germany the Sunday and public holiday ban from 00:00 to 22:00 removes an entire delivery day from the week
